OLGA SAVARY

Olga Savary was born in Belém, Pará in 1933. As a poet, writer, critic, essayist,
translator, and editor of anthologies, she has contributed to more than 200 books,
translated 40 Spanish authors and Japanese masters of Hai-Kai. She is also a journalist and has won 31 prizes for literature in Brazil, among them the 1980 Odorico Mendes prize for her translations. Her own work has been translated into versions for Spanish and English America, Germany, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Spain, Holland, Italy, England and Japan. She was named the Woman of the Year in 1975, 1995, 1996 and 2001, and represented Brazil at the Literature congress in Holland and Portugal. Her works are anthologized in "The Best 100 Short Stories of the Century" and "The Best 100 Poems of the Century" edited by Professor Italo
Moriconi-UERJ, Rio de Janeiro, Objetiva, 2000 e 2001, and in many dictionaries
and writers' encyclopedias, including "The Encyclopedia of 100 Poets of the
XX Century" RJ, O Verso, 2001). A member of the Pen Club/Unesco, the Institute
of Spanish Culture and the Humans Rights and Freedom of Expression group,
Savary has produced a vast body of work in poetry, fiction and criticism.
The National Library in Rio published her "Collective Work" in 1998.
