1 - What does Visual Poetry mean to you?
It is the combination of two forms of language: art and writing. A work that simultaneously explores the juxtaposition, combination and overlaying of these two fields, trying to explore their margins, shred their borders, and demolish the limits between them. The overlaying of the two mesh, and when juxtaposed they structurally open themselves up to new speculations.
2 – Who were and/or are your sources of inspiration, your models (either poets or artistic movements) in this artistic medium?
Inspiration always came from literature and poetry, words and texts. The first was T.S. Elliot’s poem "4 Quartets", then the writings of Calvino, Borges, Oswald de Andrade. Then, it was like an exploration and dialogue with the works of Edmond Jabès and, most of all, Jacques Derrida, with whom I created a book in 1996 titled "Enlouquecer o Subjéctil".
3 - Why did you choose to create, or why do you enjoy creating, Visual Poetry as one of your artistic expressions?
To attempt to conquer new frontiers, to explore limits, suggest new definitions among different artistic realms. To unfold the poetic tension and potential of those relationships by fusion and contamination. To cause one's work to produce constantly, losing the focus between one form and the other, transforming itself, opening.
4 - When did you first adopt Visual Poetry as a mode of expression?
Mainly between 1982 and 1998.
