Hugo Pontes is from Três Corações, south of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil and was born in 1945. His trajectory in literary life began in 1963 in Oliveira City as a part of the Grupo VIX of vanguard poetry. Since the beginning, he has been concerned with the white spaces of paper. The late sixties brought about the integration of the movement of Poema/Processo, which started in 1970, and the Visual Poem. Through this union an intense body of work developed, which reflected the Brazilian and international visual movement.
Pontes is one of the precursors of Brazilian xerography. His visual performance contains universal themes and, in relation to Brazil it registers in a critical way, without immediacy or opportunism, the atrocities which come from the incompetence of national politics. He lives in the city of Poços de Caldas, where he is a university professor at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica.
